Road Tripper: Banjo Matt Domingues

Straight out of the 50's Northwest onto the streets of Brooklyn, Matt Domingues is like a movie character. With nothing but a knapsack,a cellphone held together with a rubberband, and a banjo, he had hitch hiked from California. He was a genius banjo player with the instinct and command that made his playing seem as if it were magically bestowed on him..and indeed he was self taught. He had on two pairs of pants, beat up brown leather shoes and had an old leather journal in his back pocket that also seemed to serve as a wallet. This trip was his first out of California , it was October..and he was on his way to Maine to see the leaves change.

Ryan Greer makes cool things. Organic t-shirts featuring his own hand printed images and sold on a sidewalk stand in Soho was the starting point for the five year old Flux Productions. He has since incorporated shoes,ties and scarves into the mix. It's his newest venture into clean, minimalist leather bags though that truly signified that this young designer has turned a corner. Industrial strength felt, beautiful soft but sturdy leathers and handsome brass finishes make these fully hand cut and sown bags,wallets, and satchels something special, sophisticated and understated.

Kyp Malone at the Underground, London

While I was in London shooting for Storm and D1 agencies, I bumped into my friend Kyp Malone on Brick Lane. He was touring solo with the newly formed Rain Machine while on break from TV on the Radio. Very cool, peaceful and super chill , Kyp was the barrista at my neighborhood coffee shop in Williamsburg Brooklyn for years while playing out and paying dues. Talent,timing and perseverance took it's course and now TV on the Radio is one of the most successful indie bands out there now. He hasn't changed at all and remains grounded and humble.

The One and Only Maripol

Maripol. Photographer,film maker, stylist, art world fixture. She gave Madonna her signature groundbreaking punky street look and introduced her to my cousin Jean-Michel Basquiat when they were both ascending in the early eighties. She's French, funny, smart, endlessly curious and she absolutely adores other artists. She made the film Downtown 81 and published a number of scrapbook style photo books of her terrific era defining work. The latest is Maripolorama, which documents through vivid and lively polaroids, the fantastic NYC underground scene of the 80's.

The Godfather of Caribbean Cool : Actor,Singer Activist Harry Belafonte at Urban Zen NYC

The first time I met Harry Belafonte was up on 125th street. He was narrating a film called Citizen King that my dad was editing for a Martin Luther King day release on channel Thirteen. He was reserved but friendly, classy as all get out and he reminded me of my grandfather. I instantly saw in him,the activist that marched for civil rights along side MLK and Marlon Brando. There is a look in the eye of people that have been witness to a massive cultural, civil and spiritual shift and he had that look...and one of the best profiles ever.

Fashion Designer, Activist and Compassionate Visionary: Donna Karan at Urban Zen January 2011

I believe that every artist is given in his or her life, a mentor. Someone who sees your strengths

and weaknesses, subtly guides you, encourages and supports your artistic growth,whether they are conscious of it or not. Donna Karan has been that for me and more. Not only is she a constant source of amazement for her seemingly endless amount of

creative energy, she is inspiring in huge ways for the bigness of her heart , the depth of her compassion and she is the mom of one of my oldest friends. With the unparalleled, paradigm changing Urban Zen Foundation, Donna has responded to the pain and sadness of losing her soul mate to illness, by forging forward to help change the health care game in America and beyond. She is also commited to and is active in helping to rebuild the lives of the people of Haiti...one of my personal heroes.

Renaissance Guy: the James Franco Series NYC

To me there is nothing more crazy making and confining than labels ; one or two words that we come up with to size someone up. Define them. Pigeonhole them into a box so that that they can be understood, processed. We are hugely multifaceted beings, with talents sometimes emerging all at once,sometimes time released style, sometimes sadly not at all if we overlook our interests and instincts. Every once in a while though, an artist emerges that transcends labels because they seemingly do it all, and do it well.Writer, painter, director and actor James Franco is one of those rare birds. Fearless,visionary, mercurial and boundary breaking, he moves to the beat of his own drum. He goes from perfect stillness to rapid movement and back again, laughs easily, stares intently and has an epicene quality that seems to laugh in the face of gender stereotypes. All the makings of a true art star.
